What Is Your Name?
What is your occupation?
I work as a consultant for a small group of companies that all do work in the pharmacy consulting space. We all work to “help companies minimize their costs and grow their revenue.” Specifically, I work for two branches that hold in-person meetings for CEOs of health plans and health care professionals around the country.
Whether it’s organizing 60 person advisory board meetings over a weekend for a company bringing a new product to market, or taking 20 CEOs to a foreign country for a week to study different health care systems around the world. I sit in front of a computer a lot and don’t get out much, except for the meetings themselves.
How was your body before Trevor Kashey Nutrition?
Before TKN I feel like my body was ok. It could perform physically like a honda civic. I could do everyday stuff without a problem. When I put in some effort I could do some physical things pretty well. But I wasn’t exactly winning all the races. I looked fine. Not big but not like an athlete. I was just a man in his 30s.
But I could tell I was at the precipice of decline if I wasn’t careful. My body was getting softer, you had to look in the right light to find some muscle definition, and it was more common to make noises when getting out of my chair after a long session at the computer or whatever. All unacceptable to me!
How did that (state of being) make you feel?
I feel like I decided to change at just the right time. I wasn’t QUITE at the feeling bad about myself phase, but I was staring at it, certainly. I didn’t want to get soft. I didn’t want to stop being able to do fun and challenging physical things. I was getting worried that my current habits were no longer enough to give me the body and the life that I wanted.
So I was frustrated, I was a bit mad, a little unhappy, and scared. Scared of what to do to change it since what I had been doing all my life was no longer enough apparently. But I also found some motivation. I was getting mad at feeling like that, and I knew there had to be a way to make a change. It just took me a while to get there, and I needed help getting there, too.
What were you unable to do that you wished you could do?
For me it was about what won’t I be able to do TOMORROW, more than what I couldn’t do now. Things were getting more difficult, I felt like I was losing mobility, not gaining strength or muscle like I wanted, etc. I wasn’t being held back too much yet, where I couldn’t do things I wanted. I was actively taking on new physical challenges, but I felt like pieces were missing.
The sheer force of will can get you through a lot when it comes to moving your body around, but knowing that you’re being smart about it, knowing that you’re maximizing your potential and being efficient…I didn’t have those things. I didn’t want to be in an ongoing state of “just forcing it.” I wanted to learn how to get better, not just get by.
During that time, how did your current state of being affect those around you?
During all that time I think I could get pretty introspective, which maybe came off as a little withdrawn, or aloof. I think because I didn’t know what to do or how to do it there was a loss of motivation. Life got a little slower, a little less fun, a little more dull and pedestrian. It creates an air of just…bummer. It’s a downer when someone is starting the spiral down, and I probably had a bit of that hanging over my head.
How did you hear about Trevor Kashey Nutrition?
I heard about TKN through my wonderful and amazing wife Becca! She heard about it through her work, and Gym Lords, and hopped right on. I watched her change before my eyes in all sorts of ways: physically, mentally, energy, outlook, etc. After enough months of her pushing me to get involved and seeing her level of ass-kicking rise, she finally got me to bite and join the crew.
What were your doubts and fears before starting the program?
There are kind of two stages of doubts and fears for me. Initially, before Becca got started it was just “is this a gimmicky thing that says they can get you results the right way, make it sustainable, and continue eating what you want?” Is this just a too-good-to-be-true diet plan that is going to just shed water weight give you a 900 calorie diet for a ton of money? So I was worried about that, but only at the start.
As I saw how it worked and the results Becca was getting I think my doubts shifted more to “will it work for me?” I had to ask myself “will I have the discipline to get the results I know are possible since I see them first hand?” So that shifted my fears onto me, my discipline, my habits, my ability. The program works if you work….would I work?
What made you say YES anyways?
Becca’s support made me say yes to TKN. She knew what I wanted and how I was struggling on my own, and she knew she had to beat me down a bit before I would let myself do what was right, haha. I had enough proof, I had the belief, and I said “fuck it, it’s just money, and if it does work it’ll be so worth it.” And it has been!
Where is your body/mind now?
It’s only been about 12 or 13 weeks for me since I started coaching so I’m still in the young stages, but even so, I’ve seen huge changes in both my body and my mind. Physically I’ve been able to shed fat and keep it off without really suffering a lack of food, quantity, or type.
That’s been huge. I’m seeing the definition of muscle without even being able to get to the gym for literally months. That’s super cool. And mentally I’ve changed a lot too. I’ve learned to look at planning and measuring food as a good thing. A tool for success. It’s not a chore, it’s not a pain…it’s how I’m going to achieve my goals, and that makes it all good.
Food doesn’t have to be stressful, it doesn’t have to be a mystery, it doesn’t have to be something you live without. And things I thought I loved eating and needed in my diet are things I’m gladly letting go now, which is cool. I never would have believed I’d do that.
How does that make you feel?
It’s all an empowering experience. Success truly does lie within you. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people in a sense, but at the end of the day, it’s all up to you. Your friends and family around you can make things easier or more difficult, your coach can give you the knowledge and help you understand what you need to do and why, but no one puts food in your mouth or data in your tracker except you.
That means you bear all the responsibility: if you fail, it’s your fault. But if you succeed, it’s your fault. Having your future in your own hands is incredibly empowering. It reminds me of a quote from the movie Kate & Leopold…the young brother is trying to get advice on asking out a woman and Leopold, from the 1800s, tells him the whole point of courting is “to keep the ball in YOUR court.”
In so many ways people want to “put the ball in your court” to put the responsibility on someone else. But you lose control that way. Keep the ball, keep control, and you’re in charge of your destiny.
What are you able to do now that you were not able to do before?
I think the biggest things (so far!) that I can do that I wasn’t able to do, or wasn’t good at, before comes down to controlling my actions. I wouldn’t have avoided off-plan foods at parties or abstained from drinking if everyone else was drinking, or brought my food to someone’s house for dinner.
I’m able to do those things with confidence now because I understand food pushers better, and I understand why people act the way they do – whether that’s guilting others into eating or the person who brings their food to parties. I can say no to things that don’t match my goals better than ever, and I can stay disciplined when it comes to temptations.
What positive impact did that have on others around you that you might not have expected?
Going through this process with my wife has been awesome. I think neither of us understood how reinforcing it would be to have someone on a similar journey in the house. We both knew it would be HARDER to only have one of us doing this while the other could be just doing whatever they wanted food-wise every day.
There was a huge positive to doing this together, and beyond just being successful with our nutrition. We got a ton of reinforced support and understanding from each other, which was a huge help. It’s been good for us as individuals but also as a couple.
What would you tell someone who is reading this right now and is unsure about taking the next step?
When it comes to going all-in on something like this, one of the biggest factors for me was my perspective. What do you spend money on that isn’t important, or doesn’t further your goals? What is more important than your health and how you feel every day is the only body you have on this earth?
Those two questions made the decision so easy for me. You get one body, one life, and it can be an asset or a liability. Everything you do comes down to “can you do it” and “can you do it in a way that is enjoyable.” So to me, number 1, is a functioning body that is healthy enough to stay alive and do anything important? Yes? Good.
Now, what the hell else is more important than making sure that stays true? Your morning coffee at Starbucks? New mods for your car? Video games? Clothes? None of that matters if you’re dead next year because you killed yourself with poor nutrition.
Saving up for that vacation won’t be necessary when you can’t walk down the stairs without losing your breath. Check your perspective and set your priorities.
Understanding the importance of being healthy and physically capable was the first step, and then recognizing that without that nothing else matters made spending ANY amount of money to attain it an easy decision.
How likely are you to recommend TKN to a friend?
I would recommend TKN to friends, and already have! I think everyone needs to get serious about where they are and what they want before they’re ready for it though, and I know you guys have a process to ensure that everyone is ready before starting. I’ve got faith in your process!
